Often when people think about
pursuing law as a profession, they tend to assume that their only options would
to be to become a lawyer or a judge. However, this is not the case. The law
field compromises of various career options for a student passionate about law.
Paralegal studies is one such field.
Paralegals play a crucial role in
legal companies and departments. They are well educated and trained in the
field of law, which equips them to carry out a number of important tasks in a
law firm or organisation. Paralegals work very closely with lawyers and it is
their responsibility to ensure that even the minor details pertaining to their
role is covered and carried out with the utmost diligence.
Paralegals are responsible for
doing research, drafting documents, interviewing witnesses and clients, among
many other tasks. The success of each case is dependent on successful
collaboration between a lawyer and their paralegal. Paralegals act as a support
structure for lawyers.
If you have always had an interest
in law and its complexities, then Paralegal studies might be the field for you
to explore. Paralegals are the backbone of law and work very hard to ensure
that everything in the law firm is up to date.
An example of a student with a
passion for Law is Melite Renate Campher who studied a Paralegal Diploma with
INTEC. Though she loved the studying experience, what she loved the most was the
quality of the course content. It covered everything she needed to know about
what practicing as paralegal was all about. She said the campus was also a good
experience for her.
“I have always wanted to get into
law and I’m very passionate about it,” said Melite.
The work that is put into a case or
a claim depends on how much information or research has been done on behalf of
the client. Representatives have to literally immerse themselves into their
work in order to get the best results for their client.
There are different elements within law that the
paralegal will have to cover in their career. Modules such as the South African
Law, which covers the constitution, the different components of law and the
court structure in South Africa, are some of the basic theory that will be
covered in a Paralegal qualification.
Without a doubt, working in the law industry requires people with mental focus, attention to detail as well as discipline. If you feel that, this describes you and it is a career that you are passionate to pursue, contact a college like INTEC.
