Awaiting matric results can be a stressful time for students all around the country.

It is important that students keep a positive outlook during this time. As we all know, a matric certificate affords students with more educational and career opportunities. This is a defining moment that affects the prospects of each student.

This is a period where matriculants are highly stressed and handle the anxiety differently. According to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), the average suicide rate is 17.2 per 100 000 students (8% of all deaths). Some of these suicides take place when students dont get the outcomes that they expected in their results. There should be more awareness to help students to become hopeful and realise that there are other options.

More counselling should be provided, that will assist students in dealing with the stress surrounding this period. However, not all students know that they can take positive steps and turn out to be successful in life, even if they have not made it through matric. Students need to be aware of measures to take to improve matric results and not perceive this as a setback.

Here are some effective approaches and advice to assist matric students to get through this period.

Encourage Matric Students to Receive Pre-Counselling

It is crucial for students to receive counselling before their matric results. This will reduce the high number of suicides that occur in this period. This early intervention can save a life and convince students that there is always hope.

There are multiple counselling centres that are set up to assist learners before and after the matric results have been released. These are places where the matric student can get therapy and advice that is necessary to help them. These sessions provide students with the support and knowledge they need to make it through the stages of their matric year.

What Suicide Signs should you look for in your loved ones?

Although matric is largely a positive and crucial year in a young persons life, it also comes with a lot of pressure. As a parent or concerned elder of a peer, you will need to be discerning and attentive to students doing their matric year. Their behaviour and attitude should be monitored at all times.

Although not all students would want to commit suicide, it is worthy to find out how you can help prevent someone contemplating suicide. If students do not pass their matric, it can be a traumatic experience.

Here are some signs to look for in students that are depressed or suicidal:

         Withdrawn and always by themselves

         Not communicating as often

Speaking negatively about school and their studies

         Showing emotions of sadness

Any talk about ending their lives- even if its a joke

         Not motivated to study

         Self-criticism

         Aggressive behaviour

         Change in personality

Encourage Students to be Positive despite the Outcome

With the enormous amount of pressure that students have to pass matric, it becomes an overwhelming experience. When a student does not pass their matric, they can deal with the trauma in different ways. When learners do not have adequate support during this time, the effects can be detrimental.

A matric learner going through disappointment needs to be given reassurance and courage to try again. They should be motivated to not give up and most importantly, they should be directed to look at the bigger picture. The positive aspect they should focus on is that they have the rest of their lives to make something out of themselves through their careers.

The are other alternatives when matrics fail or do poorly. It is not the end of the road. There are many institutions that provide that all-important lifeline when a matric learner needs to rewrite their matric grade.

Here are some ways that learners can stay positive despite the outcome:

To speak about their feelings and express their goals

Do research on the options they have after the results

Have an action plan to rewrite their Matric or study further

What are the options for Matric Students who have not passed?

With Intec College, students can either rewrite their matric examinations or rewrite a single subject to upgrade their results.

Alternatively, students can choose to study from a range of programmes through Intecs correspondence college that will enable them to begin their careers or have access to educational opportunities.

The difference with Intec College is that it has a superior student support structure that gives students an enhanced educational experience. In their academic journey, students are assisted by the Academic Advising Centre. This is the student support team that is dedicated to helping students in all areas of their studies and ensuring that they perform well. This unique benefit enables students to pass their matric studies and gain a matric certificate.
