National Senior Certificate Grade 11
The Grade 11 Course is important stepping stone to obtaining the National Senior Certificate. It is designed to start your preparation for your final Grade 12 year.
Entrance Requirements
An official Grade 10 National Senior Certificate report which indicates promotion to Grade 11.
Course Duration
Your study period for this course is 18 months. You can however complete it within 12 months if you work hard and consistently.
Subject Selection Process
Make sure that you select the same subjects that you selected in Grade 10, and that you will need in Grade 12 for the career path that you want to pursue. (You are not allowed to have different subject selections for different grades)
Subjects are not offered in Afrikaans in Grade 11. Subjects are available in English only.
- 2 Languages from Group A must be chosen, one of which must be a Home Language.
- Mathematics OR Mathematical Literacy AND Life Orientation are compulsory.
- Mathematical Literacy may not be chosen with Physical Sciences or Agricultural Sciences.
- Mathematics must be chosen with Physical Sciences.
- We strongly recommend that you choose Mathematics with Accounting

Continuous Assessment Task (CASS)
- Continuous Assessment is assessment that takes place throughout the year. It consists of various types of assessment tasks like research projects, controlled tests, investigation tasks, written reports. etc.
- All assessment for Grade 11, will be internally conducted by INTEC College. Your progress to Grade 12 will be determined by a CASS mark and a final examination mark.
- All continuous assessment tasks have to be completed and submitted for marking in order for you to be resulted after your internal examinations have been written.
- The CASS mark will contribute 25% to your total mark, and the final examination will contribute 75%.
Controlled Test
You must write a minimum of 3 controlled test for each subject, except Life Orientation.
- Life Orientation has two examinations, unlike the other subjects for which you have to write controlled tests AND examinations.
- Controlled tests are tests that take place under supervised, examination conditions.
- Controlled tests will be done via private invigilation.
- You will be responsible for making the necessary arrangements for private invigilation for controlled tests, the criteria for which will be set by the College.
- You will take responsibility for any costs attached to private invigilation. (This includes: returning the controlled test via courier or registered mail, paying the private invigilator and for the assessment venue if necessary)
- Controlled tests will NOT be in your study guide.
- The process that needs to be followed in order to write the controlled tests, and the rules attached to private invigilation can be found in the study guides for each subject, or may be obtained from a Student Counsellor at INTEC College.
Oral Component for Languages
- You will be required to do an assessment for the Oral component of the languages that you are studying. This will be face-to-face contact sessions with qualified Grade 10 - 12 language educators.
- It will be your responsibility to find and make the necessary arrangements with appropriately qualified Grade 10 - 12 language educators, who are currently teaching the language for which you have to be assessed, at the required level (Home or First Additional Language). (Consult your language study guides for additional information)
- The assessment for the Oral component for languages is a formal examination that is compulsory. It will form part of your CASS mark and part of your final examination mark.
- You will be provided with an oral assessment pack which will contain a voucher for remuneration of the educator.
Portfolio
- You must, as part of your studies, compile (put together) a portfolio for each subject.
- A portfolio for a particular subject will contain all the required continuous assessment tasks/assignments that you have completed (and that have been marked) for each subject.
- You must keep your portfolio for each subject, neatly filed in a safe place for the duration of your studies (and at least 6 months after), because the College may, at any time, request that you submit it for moderation.
Examinations
- Final examinations are compulsory in Grade 11. It contributes 75% towards your final mark. Your progress to Grade 12 is determined by the final examination as well as the marks obtained for continuous assessment.
- Your final examination for Grade 11 will be an internal examination administered by INTEC College.
- Examination venues will be provided in major centres in each province.
- Examination fees are excluded from your enrollment fees. These examination fees are R350 per subject and are subject to change.
- You will be examined and assessed on prescribed literature for all the languages that you select. Prescribed textbooks and additional study aids for Prescribed literature are not included in the course. You will need to source and purchase prescribed literature textbooks and additional study aids from external suppliers or publishers.
- Upon successful completion of Grade 11, you will be issued with a statement of results.
- Examinations will be conducted twice a year for Grade 11: in June/July and October/November.
- This means that for Grade 11, you will have an opportunity to either write final examinations for subjects in the middle of the year, or at the end of the year.
Minimum pass requirements
- You need to write 7 subjects, 4 of which are compulsory subjects, and are called fundamentals. The other three subjects are called electives.
- The Fundamentals are: A Home Language, A First Additional Language, Life Orientation, Mathematics OR Mathematical Literacy.
- You need to obtain 40% for 3 subjects, one of which must be a Home Language. The other 2 can be any other 2 subjects.
- You will be required to obtain 30% for 3 other subjects.
In summary: You need to pass 3 subjects with 40 % (of which one must be a Home Language) and 3 with 30%.
These are also the minimum pass requirements to obtain the National Senior Certificate at the end of your Grade 12 year.
