Career Opportunities

  • save money by sewing for yourself and your family;
  • experience a satisfying and creative hobby;
  • set up a business in sewing garments, altering or mending shop-bought garments, making school uniforms, providing a fabric-cutting or pattern alteration service;
  • offer sewing classes or become a demonstrator / sales person for a sewing machine retailer;
  • create original garments for flea markets or the local tourist trade.

Entrance Requirement
Grade 10 (Std. 8) or equivalent, or relevant work experience and access to a sewing machine.

Course Duration
You should be able to complete this course within 24 months.

Course Content

  • Introduction to Sewing:
    Tools and equipment, stitches, seams, patterns, simple alterations and a glossary of terms used in fashion design and sewing.

  • Basic Dressmaking Processes
  • Decorative Features:
    All types of openings, plackets, zips, cuffs and collars, etc.

  • Fibres and Fabrics
  • Advanced Dressmaking Techniques:
    Corners, points, overlaid seams, interfacing, lining, coats and jackets, etc.

  • Alterations and Fitting
  • Pattern Alterations
  • Special Garments:
    Maternity wear, children’s wear, nightwear and underwear, seams and finishes for fine fabrics and lace application.

  • Drafting Patterns from Basic Patterns
  • Designing by Draping


Start your own Small Business
All INTEC Job Creator programmes include a subject called How to Start a Small Business. This subject will teach you the following:
  • Record business financial transactions

  • Perform value added tax calculations and complete returns

  • Cost and price a product

  • Complete PAYE documents


  • Assessment
    All required assignments must be completed and sent to the College for marking. All assignments must be successfully passed in order to obtain the award.

    Award
    On successful completion you will receive your INTEC Dressmaking Diploma.
